Or How to be Useful (and Polite) to Others in the Group!
Once you have an account with Google and have joined the Morris Ring's Google Group (MRGG),
the next obvious question is what can I use it for, and also how can I use it
effectively? So, some simple do and don't - suggestions. Pardon me, if your netiquette is already
impeccable, for the comments about proper use of the MRGG!
- Use the Group email address, the-morris-ring@googlegroups.com, to send messages to everyone in the Group.
DO NOT ADD ATTACHMENTS - pictures, documents, etc, these MUST be put into the Files section of the web site.
- A major reason to have the Group is to enable the Squire, Bagman and Treasurer to contact a large group of members
without resorting to a huge email list, or sending large attachments via an email list. The latter form of
communication is increasingly treated as spam by recipient ISPs.
- Please avoid sending 'one-liners' which amount to a 'me too' agreement or disagreement!
- If you want to contact an individual in the Group, then in most cases it is
better to do this outside the Group unless it concerns something that the whole group is discussing.
- Any complaints about any posting: email, these Pages, or a File, should be addressed outside of the
Group to the person making the post and copied to me. Don't send it to the whole Group of several hundred
members!
- For larger bits of information use Pages or Files. If you put one of these onto our Group web site,
then only you (and me!) can delete it (see the first instruction).
- Please try posting information such as your Side calendar, events that you think may interest other
Morris dancers, photos (use jpg), but also items connected with our dances and music. We have about 1
00Mb of space, so have to be careful but not too frugal with postings.
- When posting Files please remember that not everyone has expensive software from Microsoft such as Excel,
Powerpoint, or even Word. So that it is often best to choose text, HTML (e.g. this Page), or Adobe pdf,
for a post to Files. However, it is possible to get readers for all formats such as Excel, Powerpoint,
Word and Adobe pdf.
- To see the Files, just click on the item you want, however note that some of these items are rather large,
and will be difficult to see via a dial-up connection.
- What else? Well, I'll add to this page as necessary, but also remember that once you have
signed into the Google Groups system, you can also set up your own Group, and that these are excellent, easy
ways to send out details of Morris Side activities within your own side. Also, once men are in such
a Group, they can join the Ring Group ......
- PRIVACY. The Morris Ring Google Group is private - that is it is not listed or indexed
by the Google system - this means that the site contents are only visible to the group members.
Since each member of the group has to login under their own password and email, the system does
not suffer from the security problem created whereby a common password has to be known by x-hundred
members. Note also that if you change your email address you will need to set up a new account
with the Google Groups system, and, of course, reset or change your password, for the new
address. Your old email can be removed from the MRGG (by me or one of the managers), and you will also
need to close your Google Group account associated with your old email. Alternatively,
just forget about it .....!
